A few days ago, Mollie showed her garden. It’s time for me to show mine. Why is the garden in pots?, you ask. The answer is “bunnies”. They’ll eat anything in sight but won’t go into these pots. I guess it’s because they can’t see what they’re jumping into and I know they could jump in there if they wanted.
Notice the black spaghetti stuff. That’s part of our drip irrigation system. He hooked it up to the system and the black rubber piping goes into the pvc white pipe you see with a drip system head on top of the pipe. This simulates rain twice a day. The fern-like stuff in the orange and green pots are asparagus-the second year for those plants and the harvesting begins next spring. In the spring there were radishes in the pots, but they don’t like the heat so we won’t have any for the next couple of months. There are tomatoes in the orange and green pots also. in the grey pot, there are Scotch Bonnet peppers, habanero peppers and eggplant.
The white things are eggplants and They’ve had a few eggplant dinners and the plants keep producing more (the purple flowers are eggplant). The weirdly shaped peppers are orders of magnitude hotter than jalapenos. All the vegetables are heirlooms which means that their seeds can be planted and will produce the same vegetables as opposed to hybrids that you must get new seeds every year because the fruits of the seeds are usually different and not as good. The heirlooms haven’t been artificially genetically modified. We had one incident of disappearing plants
That caterpillar was the same one that ate Chicago last year-it was BIG. I believe that its Mommy was the moth seen here and the species is Manduca Rustica which can be found in the Southern US and Northern Mexico. I love the garden because it produces food, although I personally wouldn’t eat the peppers. You can’t touch them and then wipe your eyes-WOWZEE. He tried to grow habaneros in the ground in prior years but the rabbits even ate those.

I should have fed it to the parrot but I think it’d take her a week to eat it.
Holy caterpillar Batman!! Hopefully he won’t eat too much like The Very Hungry Caterpillar did! I think they should grow some green beans too!

He did put a dent in the garden before he was discovered. We get good frozen green beans but the eggplant isn’t great at the stores and it’s expensive-much fresher and cheaper from the garden. Eggplant loves the heat.
Yeah….let the bunnies eat those peppers!!! That would be fun to watch.
Love your container garden. We have the same thing, but SHE has to water it. We mostly have drought resistant native plants….or ‘grow best when neglected’ plants.

We have drought resistant vegetation but who wants to eat cactus? We have to have a drip system because we probably get less water than you (we can go for months without rain). The citrus is OK with dry but needs some water.

That caterpillar looks like the one from movie “A Bugs Life” – we are very impressed with your garden and how much you manage to grow despite living in what sounds like the desert.

Is that the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland? I had no clue that the eggplants are white first. I agree for the peppers, mom removed the small pips and then she touched her eyes with her pepper-paws – it was like tear gas :o)
It’s a Japanese variety-Little Spooky which is supposed to keep the spirits away. That caterpillar is from Alice-it ate the Mad Hatter, I think
nice garden, kyla! we have one like that too on our little patio, but strangely it hasn’t been hot here so there is not much fruit on the tomato and eggplant. last eyar this time it was too hot, so there also was not much fruit on the tomato and eggplant. yeesh!

I loves your garden Kyla! Brilliant drip system…Ma has to set one of those up, the waterin’ all the pots is gettin’ on her nerves!! Anyhu, I can’t believes the bunnies ate the habeneros!!! I bets those ‘bunny pellets’ were HOT stuffs!! BOL

Wow Kyla, you guys certainly do have a green thumb 🙂 That caterpillar though I know destructive was super cute, I was expecting it to turn into something a bit more “flashy”…
