Back from the vet

We went to the vet this morning. While waiting (there were 2 emergency cases today), we barked at a very nice lady. Her car, front and back:

Hmmmm, does that remind you of anyone we know?

Since they both claim to be the “crazy lady”, it isn’t safe here with two of them on the loose.

Now to the vet. It’s not a good sign when I need my once every 25 day shot for Addison’s disease and my bandage changed but am told that the vet needs to talk to us. Usually the shot and bandage are handled by vet techs, not the vet. The story is that the results of the biopsy on my dear, departed toe are in.  There’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that there was a tumo(u)r. Melanoma. The good news is that the cancerous count was low. The MI (mitotic index) at the worst point was 3 per 400 x field. Now, I’m not medical but was told that it was low. The other piece of good news is that there was no melanoma at the edge of the toe that was nearest to my (now mangled) body. They got it all. They think I’m safe for a year but they have tests they can run. X-rays, ultrasound, and an experimental melanoma vaccine. The peeps need to think about this but the first inclination is that if I have a year, I will be almost 13. They need to think about doing anything and my quality of life (which is improving daily).

Oh yeah, I forgot. Besides the other two, I’m the third crazy lady around here. There ought to be a warning sign on the roads.

I feel a crisis coming on.

  1. On the whole, we don’t really like those ‘family’ stickers. BUT we love those!

And that Crisis call centre….out of service…..priceless!

Glad the toe report is not too bad! Hopefully, they got it all and you’ll be back on all 4 paws VERY soon.

  2. I’m glad that things are improving. I wanted a sign when my Ally was sick, “Please be nice to me… the bitch is not well, and neither is the dog.”

  3. I’m glad to hear the news, even if there is some bad. Keep on going, Kyla!

  4. Well that report sounds pretty good to me. You know my Lee see a hematologist-oncologist and having a clear field where they took you toe off and that count of cells is really really low. Lee would probably go for the immunotherapy the vaccines designed to elicit a host immune response. Oh and if that women has twelve dogs well maybe a little crazy. We were keeping our paws crossed tightly for you Kyla.
    Happy Memorial Day

    • Actually we met that lady personally. She cares for and loves those dogs very much. For example, she makes their food out of quality ingredients herself.

      She’s perfectly sane. See here

      • I remember her, she was wearing the cone of shame because she scratched her cornea. There is a thin line between genius and insanity.

  5. Okays, I thinks that is mostly good news! And that is comin’ from a pessimist!! Low count, clean borders, all sound good to me! I would probably go with the vaccine if you have a good history with vaccines and the side effects are minimal.
I say, let the peeps worry abouts those things, there are more important thingies to do ~ like boss around the youngin’s! And green beans….always green beans!
Paws crossed over here, and sendin’ healin’ vibes…
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

  6. Well I guess it are mostly good news – sending some POTP anyways though. ❤

  7. I think the vet just wanted to see his Kyla again. These doctors, they’ll make any excuse to visit with their friends.

  8. You have more good news than bad. Remember that a positive attitude is worth a whole lot. I would go for the vaccine if there are not many bad consequences. Our prayers are with you , your sisters, ad your parents.

  9. I’m not a dogter buts I play one on TV and what I’m hearing sounds pretty good to me. Glad you’re going to be okay.

    Aroo to you,
    Sully

  10. Ok, after reading your post and what Sweet William’s mom Lee said I feel a bit better. I am glad that those numbers are low and the field was clear and glad of course that you are feeling better. Our Misty lived to the age of 15 – just so you know….
    Alyssa, Mr. Fox & Scruffy

  11. Glad they were able to remove the yucky part of your toe Kyla. You’re a tough old, excuse me, mature, bird. You can pull through anything. Thinking of you!

  12. Oh Kyla sweetie at least they contained it for now and we have our fingers and paws crossed really tight that it won’t come back. Ancient Pip when she was alive had a tumour cut out above her tail and it never came back and she lived till 16 plus and we sadly lost her last December to old age. So there is hope and we send healing vibes and POTP.
Have a serene Sunday and let us all enjoy some big easy today.
    Best wishes Molly

  13. I’m glad to read the mostly good news. 3 crazy ladies at the vet? wait I come over, I’m a crazy lady too , I just look different :o)

  14. Umm, you’re crazy but no lady.

  15. I too think you have more good news than bad and you all can think about that is going to happen or not going to happen. We just want to know what the final decision is. Okay?

Have a woof woof day. My best to your humans. 🙂

  16. Well, we guess the report is more good than bad, and it looks like you will be going back to the vet for another 12 years!

    The Mad Scots

  17. Happy to hear you have mostly good news and that you’re back to playing with the younguns and squeaky toys! We have been thinking about you. Gonna keep sending POTP. A little extra, we think, is good.

    Waggies,
Braeden and Seth (and the Mom peep)

  18. Good to hear the results are mostly good. Hope you’re feeling better xxx

  19. Thanks, Misaki. We’re expecting the best.

  20. Bad news, trumped by good news! That’s the kind we glad! Glad things seem to be turning out okay and you are the mend!!

    Edgar and his mum

  21. Kyla-dear, we support you and your peeps which ever route you decide to take. Butt now please tell us, why do they “think you’re safe for a year”, why only a year?
    Wally & Sammy

    • Because if the C spread to other parts of my body, it would take a year to become awful. They have to weigh the effects of finding out with ultrasound, x-rays and an experimental drug that may not be needed with the fact that my normal life expectancy isn’t much more than a year anyway. I’m the oldest Scottie in Blogville and some who were born after me (Finlay, Daisy) are at the bridge. They want more than to just have me alive, They want a good quality of life for the time that I’m here.

  22. I need that sticker. Kyla, you don’t know how pawleased we are to hear that it is mainly good news. Sending all our love and hugs xxoxxxx

    Mollie and Alfie

  23. OK. I’m feeling pretty good about this.

#1, because you’re feisty and you can handle anything.
#2, because the C count was very low. (That’s terrierific!).
#3, because the smart dogtor got all the bad stuff out.
#4, because when BoBo found he had melanoma of the gum at 11, the dogtor got it all out and he lived waaaaay beyond only a year. He lived for YEARS. 16 to be exact. His life was terrierific.
#5, because, well, because I said so. Now, repeat after moi: I’m OK. I’m OK. I will continue to be OK.

Now. On to some GREEN BEANS!!!!!!

    Your Pal, Stuart

  24. i realize I am sadly not far off from being a crazy dog lady also, as I think those are quite hilarious and something not far of what I would do!!! HEEHEE Also I do not know a lot about how cancer works but I am thinking the low count is a very good thing and will hopefully not be coming back?! Keep me updated Kyla

  25. I hope too that you’re safe for a year. Vet’s are never nice.

    • But vets are necessary sometimes. This one pulled me through Addision’s disease (still taking a shot every 25 days), pancreatitis last year and now this. Without Dr. Cohen, I wouldn’t be alive. I love cats but with the 2 young dogs and a parrot, we can’t. When I was rescued, I was with cats and it’s bad form to turn on a fellow inmate.
