Kyla. Jalisco, Mexico July 26, 2002-Anthem, Arizona December 17, 2014

Kaci here with Kali at my side. In Christmas season, there’s a lot of getting and receiving gifts. December 2002, we received a gift from heaven. Today, we had to give her back. In September, we learned that Kyla’s melanoma spread and she had 1 to 6 months left with 3 being most likely. It was three months. For those 3 months, Kyla was pampered-anything for Kyla. Earlier last week, she started going poo in the house even though she had access to the dog run 24/7. We could have lived with that. She also started to not eat her apple that was on top of her food. She was on a pain med that had a side effect of hunger and normally Kyla was very food driven and perpetually hungry so a refusal to eat something was serious. Last Wednesday, the wheezing started when she inhaled. The peeps made an appointment for today, hoping that it would be cancelled and Kyla would rally, but her shivering indicated pain-even though she was on pain meds. She was keeping to herself in a corner or in her crate. Since last Thursday, the vet and the peeps have been trying everything and every med but it isn’t working. Knowing what the cause was of all this and the fact that Kyla was going downhill rapidly and would never improve, we kept the appointment. Kyla was released from her misery on the 17th at 11:31 in the morning Mountain Standard Time (GMT-7). She went downhill really quickly after being mostly normal since the diagnosis. I think that it is a blessing because we knew it was time and had it been slow and gradual, we would always wonder when the exact time for it was.

She left Casa Kyla for the last time and she knew what was happening and welcomed it. It was her final ride in her beloved ScottieMobile before she transferred to the express to the rainbow bridge. She handed me a packet and told me not to open it for a few days. I’ll honor her wishes. Even though everyone here knew it was coming and agreed with the timing, it’s still a real downer. Even though I have Kali, it is going to be tough for me. I missed Kyla when she went for her once every 25 days Addison’s Disease shot and she was gone for less than an hour.

Kyla really appreciated the Highland Games held in her honor in October. It was a time for food and fun and she was into those, even if it was like attending her own funeral. She wanted a celebration, not a mourning.  Unfortunately, 2014 was a bad year for Scottie females. First her good friend, Daisy. Then another good friend, Jazzi. She’s with them now. She’s also with her best friend, Kenzie who lived with her since March, 2003 when Kenzie was six weeks old until Kenzie crossed in October 2012.

Kyla told me to tell you that she wants everyone to not feel bad about her passing. She said she cheated death a couple of times before-with her Addision’s disease and her pancreatitis and that she lived longer than a Scottie is supposed to live. She never thought that a puppy mill puppy from Mexico would have such a wonderful life, a family that loved her very much and friends from around the world. “Tell everyone in Blogville that I loved them, I want everyone to continue to try to make the world a better place for animals and their humans. Please have a great holiday season and don’t dwell on me. No cheating-I’ll be watching.”

“Until we meet again.”

Kyla went out Kyla-style-eating treats.

  16. Kyla did not want us to mourn when she went to the Bridge – but it’s very hard not to. I only knew her a brief time but felt as though maybe we’d both “been around another time” perhaps together…..I loved her sense of humor and her love of life. I will hold our brief friendship in my heart forever – and when I get there myself one day I will definitely look her up and give her a hug – from one much loved kitty to a much loved Scottie girl. My Mom and I sent purrs and love…….heartfelt ones.

  46. Now that I’ve got my thoughts together and can see the keyboard without too many tears I want to say to Kismet, Kaci, Kali and the ‘peeps’ how very very sad it was to read this. Mama wants me to add that she’s thinking of you all, as am I, and that your beloved Kyla will be greatly missed by all those that had the pleasure of knowing her. She brought a smile to our faces with her witty comments each and every time. Now she is at peace, across that bridge with her devoted Kenzie – may they reign supreme.

  57. I am so sad and so sorry to hear Kyla is gone from this earth. She brought me joy. I’m not a big blogger or commenter but I got seriously hooked on Kyla and her quick wit. You would think it’s crazy, people getting hooked on a dog over the internet, but that’s what happened to me. I fell in love with Kyla. She brought me smiles on bad days, just like my own pups do, but she was miles and miles away. My only wish is that I could’ve met her in the furs and rubbed her up. My thoughts go out to you peeps – I can’t imagine the amount of tears flowing in your house. I love you Kyla.
    Love,
    Alyssa, Mr. Fox & Scruffy

We will miss her…and will keep her in our hearts as we celebrate the holidays, as she would want.
